Schooling for the Autistic

Writer: L. M.L. M.

The sun's beaming brightly, the warm air feels amazing, but all that ends this year on August 25. Why? Because that's the first day of school ! But what does that mean for Autistic children? Big noisy sweaty buses? Loud lunch rooms? Crowded hallways for middle and high schoolers? Crowded hallways, yes, but everything else, NO! Kids With disabilities, wether it's autism or their sensitivity to heat, are put on air conditioned, little busses! These busses are usually much quieter, it's equipped with a air conditioner, a radio, and indoor lights, which are usually used for boarding when it's still dark during the early morning. For classes, autistic children are put into special education classes, equipped with the abilities to teach the children in the way they can understand. There are usually three different class rooms. One for the children who need more help and on the other side ofthe spectrum is the one for children who need less help. The biggest class is usually the class that deals with the in between. The kids who need less help are the ones who are the most treated like "normal" school kids. They walk in the halls with everyone else, alone, they open lockers by themselves, and tend to go to class like any othwr kid. They're usually in those classes for certain periods of the day, like math, and if a child is breaking down. The children who need the most help usually walk in the halls with a special ed teacher, spend most of their classes in a special ed environment, and tend to break down more easily. Now thi isn't a bad thing, in fact, it's good for their mental health! Although those children need more help, they're still very smart! They just can't learn the same way as other kids and need more assistance when they're frustrated. Before school starts, autistic children, at least me and my brother, are more easily agitated, as, like most children, we don't like school. Of course, ANY kid would rather be in person this year than deal with the chaos that was online school, I know that's true for me! So if you're worried for your autistic childs first day of school, don't be! They're in great hands!
